What to do if
you’ve lost money
in a unauthorised scam

At Refundee, unauthorised scams are what we’re contacted about most often.

In many cases, we can help, especially when the money was initially moved from a UK bank. As a regulated claims management company, if you’d like our help, just complete our online claim form or give us a call. Remember, you can do it yourself for free by taking your case to the Financial Ombudsman Service.

Why Choose Refundee to recover your unauthorised funds?

  • Over £140 million recovered for fraud victims
  • Regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority
  • The UK’s best-rated
  • Helped over 6,000 clients

How to spot an Unauthorised Transaction Scam

  1. Payments you don't recognise on your statement

Check your statements regularly. Any transaction you didn't authorise — even a small one — is a red flag. Fraudsters often test with a small amount before draining an account.

  2. Card details used online without you

Card-not-present fraud happens when your details are stolen through phishing, a data breach or a compromised website. Contact your bank immediately and freeze the card in-app.

  3. Your online banking has been accessed

If you receive login alerts, password reset codes or new device notifications you didn't request, your account may have been taken over. Change your password from a trusted device and call your bank.

  4. A 'new payee' you didn't set up

Fraudsters who take over an account often add a new payee and immediately transfer funds. Review your payee list and remove anything unfamiliar.

  5. SIM swap warning signs

Losing signal, an SMS saying your number has moved, or being locked out of accounts secured by SMS can all indicate a SIM-swap attack used to bypass 2FA.

  6. Your bank blames you and refuses a refund

Under the Payment Services Regulations, banks must refund unauthorised transactions unless they can prove gross negligence. If your bank has refused, we can challenge that decision on your behalf.
