How to spot a Timeshare Scam

   You were invited to a “free” holiday, prize draw or presentation

   Timeshare and holiday club sales almost always start with something that feels like a gift — a free stay, a scratchcard win or a complimentary lunch. The value of the “prize” is designed to make you feel obliged to sit through the sales presentation that follows.

   The presentation went on for hours and you were not allowed to leave easily

   Sessions routinely run for three to six hours, with different salespeople rotating in. This is a deliberate pressure tactic. Tired, embarrassed and worn down, people sign contracts worth tens of thousands of pounds that they never intended to buy.

   You were told the price was only available if you signed that day

   Legitimate long-term financial commitments are never “today only”. Discounts that vanish the moment you leave the room exist purely to stop you taking advice, comparing the resale market or reading the contract properly.

   A company cold-called you saying they already have a buyer

   Resale fraud targets existing owners. The caller claims a cash buyer is waiting and simply needs an upfront payment for legal fees, notary costs, transfer taxes or “release” of the funds. There is no buyer, and once the fee is paid the company stops answering.

   You paid an upfront fee to exit or cancel your timeshare

   Timeshare exit and claims companies frequently charge thousands of pounds in advance, promising to cancel a perpetuity contract or win compensation. Many never file anything at all. If you paid an upfront fee and nothing happened, you may have a claim against your bank or card provider.

   The contract runs in perpetuity or passes to your family

   Older timeshare contracts often have no end date and pass maintenance fees to your estate. Fees rise every year regardless of whether you use the property. Contracts of more than 50 years sold in Europe after 1999 may be unenforceable — which is often the basis of a successful claim.

   You were pushed into a loan or credit agreement to fund it

   Where finance was arranged at the point of sale, or the purchase was part-paid on a credit card, Section 75 and unfair-relationship arguments can make the lender jointly liable for what you were told during the presentation.
