Remember, you can do it yourself for free by taking your case to the Financial Ombudsman Service.

How to spot a Purchase Scam

  1. An unbeatable price on a hard-to-find item

Cars, puppies, concert tickets, high-end electronics and holiday lets are the most common bait. If a listing is significantly cheaper than anywhere else, be suspicious.

  2. Pressure to pay by bank transfer, not card or the platform's own payment

Fraudsters push you off Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree, Vinted or Depop and ask for a bank transfer 'to avoid fees'. Paying that way removes buyer protection.

  3. You can't view the item or meet the seller

The seller is 'working abroad', 'in the military', or the item is 'in storage'. Any legitimate seller of a car, pet or expensive item will let you view before paying.

  4. The listing photos look stock or reversed

Right-click and reverse-image search the pictures. If they appear on other listings or stock sites, the ad is fake.

  5. Fake escrow, courier or DVLA fees

You'll be told the item is being held by a courier or escrow service that needs an upfront fee released. These services do not exist — the money goes straight to the fraudster.

  6. Your bank warning was too weak or wrongly worded

Under the APP reimbursement rules, UK banks are expected to give effective warnings before sending money to a new payee. If they didn't, you may be entitled to a refund.
